본문 : 시편 136:1-26

본 시는 교창시로 첫 행에 ‘여호와께 감사하라’고 인도자가 선창하면 회중이 ‘그 인자하심이 영원하도다’라고 응답하는 형식입니다. 그리고 각 절마다 왜 하나님께 감사해야 하는지 그 이유를 설명합니다.
‘여호와께 감사하라’는 명령형이지만 우리의 고백이고 간증입니다. 하나님께 예배드리는 것이 감사의 응답이듯 우리가 교회에 나와 예배를 드릴 때마다 신앙의 고백이 있어야 합니다. 그러므로 본 시는 우리의 신앙고백이 됩니다.
우리는 왜 여호와께 감사해야 됩니까?

1. 그는 선하시기 때문이다
본 시에 나타난 하나님의 이름이나 묘사들은 여호와, 신들 중에 뛰어난 주, 주들 중에 뛰어난 주로 이것은 참 신이요 전능자시며 특히 하나님이 창조주 되심을 말씀합니다. 그는 선하시기 때문에 그의 전능하신 행동은 우리에게 유익하고 좋은 것이 됩니다.
스펄전 목사님은 ‘하나님은 모든 것을 초월한 선이시다. 하나님만이 홀로 가장 높은 선이시다’라고 말씀했습니다. 하나님은 선의 근원이시고, 모든 선 중의 선이십니다. 하나님은 선의 보존자시며, 완성자시고, 상급을 주시는 분입니다. 그러므로 하나님은 자기 백성들로부터 감사를 받으실 만합니다. 참 선이 무엇인지를 알기 원하고, 그 선을 즐기기를 원하는 사람마다 그 선을 하나님 안에서 찾아야 할 것입니다.
하나님의 선하심은 창조에서부터 나타났습니다. 하나님은 천지를 창조하심으로 우리에게 선을 베푸셨습니다. 또 예수 그리스도를 통해 죄에서 우리를 구원하여 주신 구원에서 하나님의 선이 나타났으며. 하나님의 이와 같은 선은 이스라엘뿐 아니라 세상 모든 사람에게 나타났습니다.

2. 그 인자하심이 영원하기 때문이다
본 시는 ‘그 인자하심이 영원함이로다’를 26번 반복하면서 하나님께 감사의 이유를 찾습니다. 시편 어느 곳에서도 이런 교창은 없습니다.
‘인자하심’은 히브리어로 'hesed'로 언약의 사랑, 선택된 사랑 또는 언약의 관계에 들어온 이를 사랑하는 것을 말하며 견고한 사랑, 인내하는 사랑으로 번역되기도 합니다. 하나님은 오래 참으시는 하나님이십니다. 그는 영원히 선하시고 절대로 자기 언약을 깨뜨리지 않으십니다.
우리는 날마다 하나님의 선하심과 그의 인자하심 가운데 살고 있습니다. 그러므로 이와 같은 사랑을 받은 우리는 작은 일에도 감사해야 합니다.

사랑하는 성도 여러분,

우리는 수없이 하나님을 섭섭하게 해드렸지만 하나님은 선하시고 그 인자하심으로 끝없는 사랑을 계속 베푸십니다.
하나님의 선하시고 인자하심을 힘입으며 영원토록 그의 이름으로 찬송하는 저와 여러분이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 간절히 소원합니다.


Give thanks to the Lord
(Psalm 136: 1-26)

Psalm 136 is an interchanging song. When the presider leads with the first line, 'Give thanks to the Lord,' the congregation is supposed to respond by reciting, 'His love endures forever.' Each stanza that follows explains the reason for why we give thanks to the Lord.
Although 'Give thanks to the Lord!' is an imperative, it is also our confession and witness. Just as worshipping God is a reflection of our thanks to the Lord, we must exhibit this same kind of witness in our Christianity, whenever we attend church service. Therefore, we need to see this Psalm as a confession of our faith. Why do we give thanks to the Lord?

1. Because He is good
God's name as well as its description in Psalm 136 express that the Lord is the God of gods, the Lord of lords, the true God, the Almighty, and especially the Creator of all creation. Because He is good, God's almighty acts are beneficial for us.
Charles Spurgeon said, "The Lord is the God who transcends all nature." and "The Lord alone is the highest God of the universe." God is the source of all goodness. He is the good of all goodness. He is the preserver of goodness. He is the God who accomplishes, and the God who gives us good gifts. Therefore, He deserves to receive thanks from His people. Whoever wants to know what goodness is and enjoy it must look in God. God's goodness has appeared since the creation. In accordance with the creation of the heavens and the earth, God has bestowed His goodness on us. Moreover, God's goodness has appeared in our salvation, namely our salvation through Jesus Christ. Such goodness has appeared not only to the Israelites but also to all the people all over the world.

2. Because His love endures forever
Psalm 136 repeats 'His love endures forever' 26 times to give us the reason why we should give thanks to God. Such an interchanging song does not appear in any other stanza throughout the Psalms.
The word for 'love' is 'hesed' in Hebrew, which means a promised love, chosen love, or the love of one who is related to a promise. It may be translated as a steady or patient love. God endures forever. He is forever good and never breaks His promise. Every day we are living in the midst of His goodness and love. Therefore, we who have received His love in this way must give thanks to God for every little thing.

Although we may have grieved Him on many occasions, because of His goodness and His love, God continues to bestow His love on us ceaselessly. As we receive His goodness and love, I earnestly pray that you and I will sing His name forever in the name of Jesus Christ.
