People who make the Lord their God
(Psalm 144:1-15)

Martin Luther said that true religion can be found in an individual's declaration. The fact that we can confess the Lord as my God and Jesus as my Lord is quite different from simply having dogmatic knowledge. Even Thomas fell upon his face before Christ who had risen from the dead and confessed, "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28).
In this psalm, David said, "The Lord is my rock," "my love," "my fortress," "my stronghold," and "my shield." He also concluded, "Blessed are the people of whom this is true; blessed are the people whose God is the Lord."

1. The king's thanksgiving for victory (vv. 1-4)
David praised God, his rock, the best he could. Since he knew that God gave him the ability to glorify Him, he also knew that he would receive the ability to defeat the evil, defend truth, and overcome falseness. Although David was a king, he knew that he was weak and insufficient in himself. Nevertheless, he was not afraid of anything, because he believed that God was his rock, his shield, and his love. However, David realized how valued he must have been that he receive God's great grace (v. 3). Therefore, He gave thanks to God with fear and trembling.

2. Help those who are in the midst of suffering (vv. 5-11)!
The enemy that David fought against were Gentiles. Their distinctive feature was unfaithfulness, lying, and deceitful conduct.
Just as God came down to give Moses the whole law, led Joshua against their enemies, took possession of the land of Canaan, and rescued the Israelites out of Egypt, the psalmist prayed that God should intervene and rescue him from his enemies. He sang a new song and made music to God on his ten-stringed lyre. This God is also our God, who has delivered us from the penalty and power of sin. Because a new passion for God overcame his mind, he needed to praise the Lord with a new song.

3. The king's invocation for the nation and the people (vv. 12-15)
In vv. 12-15, after God had delivered and rescued the nation and the people from crisis, David expressed as a king how the nation should be put into practice, how the younger generation should be sound (v. 12), how the industry should be prosperous (13), how peace should be brought about, and how social justice should be established.

Conclusion
The blessed live by giving thanks to God. Moreover, they entreat God to help them in the midst of their sufferings. It is possible for a nation which makes the Lord their God to establish a clean family, abundant industry, and peace and justice. Therefore, the people who take the Lord as their God will have the greatest blessing of all blessings.
