‘열 처녀 비유’의 핵심은 하나님의 나라입니다. 예수님은 천국을 설명하시기 위해 수많은 비유를 들어주셨고, 예수님의 모든 기적과 치유와 구제 사역의 궁극적인 목적도 천국이 어떤 곳인지 보여주시고자 함입니다.
유대의 혼인잔치는 일주일씩 하는 것이 상례였고, 대부분 저녁에 했는데 이는 한낮이 너무 덥고 또 히브리 개념으로는 저녁이 하루의 시작이었기 때문입니다. 신부는 보통 열 명의 들러리를 세웠습니다. 본문의 비유도 신부에게 초대 받은 열 명의 들러리에 관한 것입니다. 신랑이 결혼식장에 도착하면 신부는 들러리들과 함께 나가 신랑을 영접하여 등불을 켜고, 신랑의 집으로 떠나는 연등행렬이 벌어집니다. 그런데 본문의 경우처럼 신랑의 행차가 늦어지는 경우가 종종 있습니다.

1. 예수님 맞을 준비를 하라
예수님의 결론은 한 가지입니다. “깨어 있으라”는 것입니다(13절). 왜냐하면 예수님께서 다시 오실 그 날과 그 때를 아무도 알지 못하기 때문입니다. 본문을 보면 미련한 다섯 처녀나 지혜로운 다섯 처녀는 똑같이 결혼잔치에 초대를 받았고, 똑같이 초대에 응했고, 똑같이 신랑을 기다렸습니다. 그들은 똑같이 등을 가지고 있었고, 심지어 그들은 똑같이 자고 있었습니다. 이렇게 보면 미련한 처녀들과 지혜로운 처녀들의 차이를 알 수 없습니다. 그런데 미련한 처녀들은 등만 가지고 가고 슬기로운 처녀들은 등과 함께 그릇에 기름을 따로 담아가지고 갔습니다.
예수님의 말씀은 똑같이 교회를 다니고 있다고 안심하지 말라는 것입니다. 이것은 교회 안에도 구원 받은 성도들이 있고 그렇지 못한 사람들도 있다는 의미입니다. 깨어있으라고 해서 늘 교회에 가서 기도하고 봉사만 하라는 것이 아닙니다. 여기서 “깨어 있으라”는 말은 언제든 어디에서든 예수님이 오실 때 맞을 준비가 된 상태로 살라는 말입니다.

2. 기름을 항상 준비해 놓아야 한다
등은 신앙의 외형적 모습을 의미합니다. 교회에 출석하고 직분을 갖고 여러 가지의 종교적 행위를 말합니다. 반면 기름은 내면적인 것으로 하나님의 말씀에 순종하고 살고 있는지, 하나님과 깊은 영적인 교제를 나누고 살고 있는지, 성령충만한 삶을 살고 있는지를 의미합니다.
기름은 나누어 쓸 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 세상에는 나눠 줄 수 있는 것들도 많이 있습니다. 돈도 나눠 줄 수 있고, 자동차나 옷도 빌려 줄 수 있습니다. 그러나 구원은 나눠 줄 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 신앙은 철저히 하나님과 나와의 관계입니다.

사랑하는 성도 여러분,
아직도 잔치 집의 문은 활짝 열려 있습니다. 누구든지 등과 기름을 준비한 사람들은 다 들어 갈 수 있습니다. 그러나 그 문이 닫힐 날이 속히 올 것입니다. 그리고 문이 닫히고 나면 다시는 열리지 않을 것입니다. 하나님은 정말 오래 기다려 주시는 분이시지만, 영원히 기다리시는 분은 아니십니다.
그러므로 문이 닫히기 전에 성령의 기름을 충만하게 준비하시어 언제든지 기쁨으로 주님을 맞이할 수 있는 복된 주님의 백성들이 되시기를 간절히 소원합니다.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins
(Matt. 25:1-13)

'The parable of the ten virgins' is the core of God's kingdom of heaven. Jesus gives a great many parables in order to explain the kingdom of heaven, and wants to show that the ultimate purpose of Jesus' miracle, cure, and relief work is where the kingdom of heaven is.
It is customary for Jew to take one week for wedding feast. It is mostly held in the evening, because it is too warm to hold a banquet during the daytime, and for the Hebrews in their concept, the evening is the start for a day. A bride used to take ten bridesmaids. The parable in the text talked about ten bridesmaids who were invited by the bride. When a bridegroom arrives at the wedding, the bride with bridesmaids comes out and meets her bridegroom. They light the lamps, and a lantern parade leaves for groom's house. Nevertheless, it happens that the bridegroom's trip is often late like the case in the text.

1. Be ready for meeting Jesus
Jesus' conclusion is the only one, which is "keep watch" (v. 13), because no one knows the day or hour when Jesus will come. In the text, five foolish virgins and five wise virgins were equally invited to the wedding feast, all accepted the invitation, and they waited for the bridegroom. They also held lamps and fell asleep. In this situation, we cannot realize the difference between the wise virgins and the foolish virgins. And there, the foolish virgins went only with their lamps, and the wise ones took oil in jars along with their lamps.
Jesus says that even though we equally attend church, we never feel at ease. I t means that there are some Christians who are saved and the others who are not. The word, 'keep watch' indicates that we do not always pray and offer our service in church. Here, 'keep watch' means that whenever and wherever Jesus comes, we must live our lives by being ready for meeting Him.

2. Oils must always be ready
The lamp refers to our external appearance. It means our religious deeds of which we attend church and volunteer. On the other hand, because oil is internal, it means whether we live our lives by obeying God's word, by sharing deeply spiritual communication with God, or by living our life full of Holy Spirit.
Oil cannot be distributed and used. There are many things to give out in the world. We can give out money, and lend automobile or clothes, but we cannot give out salvation. Our faith is only the relation between God and me.

My beloved Christians,
The door of banquet is still wide open. Whoever is ready for a lamp and oil can enter the door. But the day that the door will be closed is coming near very soon. After the door closes, it will never open again. God waits for us for a long time, but he never waits for us eternally.
Therefore, before closing the door, by being ready to be filled with the oil of Holy Spirit, I sincerely pray that all of you will be the Lord's blessed people and you can joyfully meet Him in the name of Jesus Christ.
